This year, the Food and Drug Administration is launching a new product, a prescription medicine known as Celecoxib, to treat arthritis pain, the FDA said Tuesday.
The new prescription drug, made by Merck & Co. Inc., will help more than 300 million people who suffer from arthritis, according to the agency.
The drug will be sold under the brand name Celebrex, which is made by AstraZeneca. Merck and Pfizer have not disclosed the amount of the cost for the drug.
The new product is also being developed as an alternative to traditional pain relievers, the FDA said.
"This new product is an important tool in the fight against arthritis," said Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
"We need to develop more effective treatments for people who don't respond well to traditional medications," Woodcock added.
The FDA has said it wants to develop other drugs to treat a wide range of conditions, including chronic pain, arthritis and other ailments.
Celebrex, originally developed as a pain reliever, was approved by the FDA in 1995.
The FDA said it has reviewed the drug's label and determined it meets certain standards. It has also approved the drug to treat arthritis pain in 50 percent of people with a history of osteoarthritis, a type of arthritis.

A recent study by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists found that Celebrex could reduce the chances of a heart attack or stroke in women with heart disease, the study showed.
"If Celebrex is effective for arthritis pain, it is likely to be an effective treatment for that arthritis pain," Woodcock added.
The FDA is also conducting clinical trials to see if Celebrex will lead to an increased use of other arthritis pain relievers, the agency said.
"This new drug will help to reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke in women who have arthritis, and we are taking this into consideration as well," the FDA said.
